6 Mistakes You Make That Can Seriously Damage Your Hair Extensions

Vanessa Hudgens. Jennifer Lawrence. Chrissy Teigen. Kylie Jenner. Gigi Hadid—some gorgeous celebrities who are rocking the hair extension look!

While they definitely are a great way to switch up your look without having to wait months for your hair to grow out, they require some TLC to keep them looking their best!

Making these few common mistakes could seriously damage your hair extensions!

Low Quality Extensions

The first and biggest mistake you can make is choosing synthetic, low-quality hair extensions over premium, human hair extensions. While the latter may cost you a bit more, they are not only longer lasting, easier to style and react better to dyes, they also look more natural!

Incorrect Installation

Not many people will tell you this, but the installation process plays as big of a role in how long your extensions last as the quality of the hair! A licensed, certified cosmetologist—like the ones we have here at HEH—will be better able to secure the copper tube of your loc system extensions so there’s no chance of them accidentally slipping out.

Using the Wrong Hair Products

When the cosmetologist you go to recommends products to use on your extensions, play close attention! They have been in the business for years and know of the right products that can elongate the life of your extensions. Using the wrong products could not just damage the fibers, but could also cause breakage!

Not Brushing the Extensions Properly

Not Brushing the Extensions Properly

A very common mistake made by many clients is using the wrong brush to comb through their extensions—or failing to brush the extensions properly in the first place! We recommend using our specially designed HEH brush or Diana Large Fluff Comb to work through the tangles in the extensions, starting at the bottom and gently working your way up.

Sleeping with Wet/Open Hair

Hair is usually at its weakest when it’s wet. The average hair strand is made up of proteins called keratins. When your hair is dry, it forms protein-protein bonds, which are typically stronger than the hydrogen bonds made by wet hair. This is a major reason why wet hair is more prone to breakage!

Combine this phenomenon with the friction produced between your pillowcase and your head while you toss and turn at night, and you have a recipe for disaster!

Washing Them Every Day

Hair extensions do not produce their own oils, which means they rarely get greasy or emit bad odors, especially if they’re not installed close to the scalp. As such, washing them every day could actually cause the bonds to loosen and the extensions to slip out! Only wash your semi-permanent hair extensions once a week or invest in a good-quality dry shampoo to help them last their longest.
