Winter is coming. You’re all stocked up for the colder weather, having pulled out your sweaters, coats and thick, woolen socks from the back of the closet where you stashed them for the summer. And suddenly, you remember: what about my hair extensions? Will they last the frigid temperatures?
With a little extra TLC, they’ll pose no problem at all! Just as you would care for your natural hair to prevent it from getting dry, brittle and dull during the colder weather, hair extensions require the same! Because the highest-quality hair extensions are made from human hair, they are prone to the same kind of damage—loss of moisture due to the central heating, dull, brittleness due to frigid winds—as your natural hair!
Here are a few tips to help your hair extensions get through the next few months:
Use Products Specially Designed for Hair Extensions
Your natural hair has the ability to produce its own oils, preventing lack of moisture from making them weak and prone to breakage. On the other hand, human hair extensions do not have the ability to produce natural oils. Normal shampoos are chemically manufactured to remove grease and product buildup from the hair follicles, which can be extremely damaging to extensions!
Using sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners, such as Kevin Murphy’s Hydrate–Me Wash and Hydrate–Me Rinse stops hair extensions from losing any moisture, making them less prone to breakage.
Limit Heat Styling
Hair can get extremely dry and brittle in the colder months, and the same is the case for hair extensions.
While excessive hair styling is not recommended in any weather, it is even less so in winter, as these products can speed up the drying out process. If you do need to heat-style your hair for any reason, protect the hair extensions by using a heat protectant before using any styling tools on them.
It’s never more important to brush your hair extensions daily than it is during the winter months! Due to the static in the air, snow, wind and sleet, your extensions are more prone to tangling and losing moisture. Brushing will also help distribute the natural oils from your hair to your extensions.
Cover Your Extensions
Protecting your hair from the elements is the best gift you can give it this holiday season! Wear a hat or scarf when outside in the harsh air or snow to prevent your extensions from blowing about in the wind and tangling, or losing moisture.
